Polymaker PLA vs PETG: Which Filament Fits Your Project?
Choose PLA or PETG by printer compatibility, heat exposure, adhesion, ventilation, drying and total printed-part cost.

Choose based on the job
PLA is often a practical starting material for prototypes, indoor models and objects that do not face elevated temperatures. PETG may better fit some functional components that need more temperature and impact tolerance, but actual mechanical behavior depends on formulation, print orientation and settings. Neither material is automatically suitable for food-contact, structural, medical or high-temperature service.
Verify the machine and spool
Check the exact filament line's recommended nozzle and bed temperature, spool size, nozzle type, enclosure guidance and compatibility with a multi-material feed system. Brand-level assumptions are not enough. Confirm whether any specialty additive changes nozzle wear or storage requirements.
Moisture and settings
Storage and drying requirements vary by formulation and exposure. Use the manufacturer's instructions, not guessed dehydration settings. Compare stringing, surface requirements, supports and part orientation using small test prints before committing to a large project.
Calculate the real cost
Estimate grams per part using slicer data. Multiply by delivered material cost per gram, then include support waste, failed prints, electricity and any drying needs. A slightly more expensive filament that reduces failed prints may offer better total economics.
