Polymaker Filament Cost per Print: Waste, Supports and Spool Price

A repeatable cost-per-print framework accounting for usable spool weight, waste, supports, electricity and reprints.

Comparing two filament prices per kilogram is useful but incomplete. Slicer estimates, support structures, calibration pieces and failed prints determine the cost of usable results.

Start with material mass

For a 150 g part and 30 g of support, budget at least 180 g of material before rejects. At an illustrative $25 per 1,000 g spool, that is $4.50 in filament. These are example inputs, not current Polymaker pricing.

Add failure and setup waste

Track a rolling success rate by material, printer and part family. If 10% of prints fail before successful delivery, a simple planning multiplier is 1 / 0.90, excluding other setup waste. Actual failures and partial prints may consume less than a full part, so use measured grams for accounting.

Account for power and drying

Electricity equals measured kWh times your rate. High-flow or specialty filaments may require changes to print speed, extrusion temperature, nozzle type or drying workflow, so compare total production time as well as material cost.

When bulk ordering makes sense

Only compare bulk bundle savings after confirming colors, formulation, spool geometry and realistic usage before material quality changes during storage. Avoid buying incompatible spools just to hit a discount threshold.
