Formlabs Form 4: Source-Based Technical Review

Form 4 build volume, MSLA workflow, material ecosystem, layer range and what makes it different from consumer FDM printers.

Form 4 is a different manufacturing workflow

Form 4 uses masked stereolithography rather than filament extrusion. Its build volume is 200 × 125 × 210 mm, or 5.25 liters, and Formlabs lists a maximum print speed of 100 mm/hour. Linear speed in mm/hour is not directly comparable to FDM toolhead speed in mm/s because the processes expose layers differently.

Materials are an ecosystem decision

Formlabs lists 23 Formlabs materials on the cited package page and also supports third-party materials through Open Material Mode. Buyers should price resin, tanks, build platforms, washing, curing, solvent handling and protective equipment as one workflow.

Layer thickness

The official page lists 25–200 µm layer thickness. That range describes Z-layer height, not overall dimensional accuracy or guaranteed minimum feature size. Part design, orientation, support strategy and resin all affect results.

Why the sticker price is not the full comparison

FDM vs resin comparisons should include post-processing time and consumables. A resin printer can be the correct tool for detail, surface finish or application-specific materials even when raw material cost per volume is higher. The reverse is often true for larger functional parts where filament and minimal post-processing are priorities.
