How to Calculate Filament Cost per 3D Print
A transparent formula for material, electricity, failure allowance and optional machine-hour cost.
The simplest filament estimate is part grams ÷ spool grams × spool price. That is useful, but it excludes electricity, purge waste, failed prints and equipment cost.
Material cost
For a 1,000 g spool, a 100 g job uses 10% of the spool. Multiply that fraction by your actual delivered spool price. If the slicer estimate excludes purge or support, add those masses before calculating.
Electricity
Use average power over the job, not the printer's maximum rated power. A printer can draw heavily during heat-up and cycle heaters later. If you do not have a plug-in power meter, run a range of plausible average wattages instead of presenting false precision.
Failure allowance
If one in ten comparable jobs must be reprinted, the expected material cost is higher than the successful part alone. Our calculator lets you add a percentage allowance so the cost model reflects your real workflow.
Machine-hour cost
Businesses may also assign depreciation, maintenance and opportunity cost per printer-hour. Hobby users can leave this at zero. The important point is to keep the assumptions visible.
