How Much Electricity Does a 3D Printer Use?

Estimate energy cost from measured average wattage, print hours and local electricity rates without confusing rated power with average draw.

Rated power is an upper electrical specification, not an estimate of average energy use. Bed and hotend heaters cycle, chamber heaters may run intermittently, and motor/electronics loads vary.

Use kWh, not watts alone

Energy in kilowatt-hours equals average watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by hours. Multiply kWh by your electricity rate for the job cost.

Measure if the number matters

A plug-in energy meter gives a better estimate than using rated power. Measure representative jobs with the materials and chamber temperatures you actually use.

Large heated chambers change the equation

Machines with high bed temperatures or active chamber heating can consume more energy during heat-up and thermal maintenance. The K2 Plus, for example, lists active chamber heating to 60 °C. Treat that as a different workload from room-temperature PLA printing.
